Module 4. Bias Awareness and Inclusive Decision-Making
Detailed overview
General description of the unit
This unit explores how personal values, assumptions, privilege, and unconscious biases influence leadership and everyday professional decision-making. While previous modules focus on organizational structures and processes, this unit places the emphasis on the individual role of leaders, managers, educators, and professionals in creating inclusive environments. Participants engage with key concepts such as unconscious bias, intersectionality, positionality, privilege, awareness, and inclusive decision-making. Through guided reflection exercises and practical workplace examples, the unit supports learners in recognizing how their own perspectives and experiences shape judgments and actions. A strong practice-oriented approach enables participants to transfer insights directly into their professional contexts and develop more equitable and inclusive leadership practices.

Activity 1: Bingo
Participants engage in an interactive icebreaker to get to know one another, discover shared experiences, and build trust within the group. Through movement and informal conversations, they explore diverse backgrounds, skills, and perspectives.
Activity 2: Flash Questionnaire
Participants complete a short self-reflection questionnaire to assess their current awareness of bias, inclusion, and decision-making patterns. A voluntary partner exchange encourages comparison of perspectives and personal insights.
Activity 3: Wheel of Privilege
Using the Wheel of Privilege, participants reflect on their social identities, positionality, and experiences of privilege and marginalisation. The individual reflection activity raises awareness of intersectionality and the influence of social structures on perspectives and decisions.
Activity 4: Activating Bias – Fast Decisions
In small groups, participants make quick decisions in response to workplace scenarios under time pressure. The exercise highlights how unconscious bias can shape intuitive judgments and encourages reflection on automatic reactions.
Activity 5: Jigsaw
Participants collaboratively explore strategies for recognising and addressing unconscious bias through a jigsaw learning method. By becoming “experts” on different text sections and sharing their knowledge, they develop a shared understanding of inclusive leadership practices.
Activity 6: Inclusive Decision-Making – Pause & Perspective-Taking
Participants revisit workplace scenarios and analyse them more deliberately using reflective questions and perspective-taking techniques. The activity demonstrates how slowing down decision-making can help reduce bias and support inclusion.
Activity 7: Closing Reflection
Participants review their key learning outcomes and identify concrete actions for applying inclusive leadership practices in their professional contexts. The individual reflection exercise supports commitment to personal and organisational change.
